ALBION, Mich. – It was not what the Albion football team had hoped for on a Homecoming Saturday.
Playing Alma with 4,256 in attendance off their bye week, the Britons could not squash any of the Scots momentum and up-tempo offensive attack as they dropped the contest, 48-27.
Both teams traded punts to start the game, but Alma cashed in first on a nine-yard touchdown on their ensuing possession to take an early 7-0 lead.
Freshman
Davis Crossman, who made his first collegiate start, connected with sophomore
Ethan Barker on a 38-yard laser up the seam to tie the game up, completing a seven-play, 78-yard drive.
Alma answered right back, as four-year starter Carter St. John floated a pass to Eddie Williams in the end zone for a wide-open, 17-yard score to put the visitors ahead, 14-7.
After a Crossman interception, the Scots scored in three plays on a Williams one-yard run to take the advantage by two scores into the second quarter.
Crossman threw another pick, as Alma cashed in once more – this time on a two-play drive that resulted in a St. John 38-yard score to Ryan McNiff for a 27-7 lead.
Albion finally was able to muster a drive into the end zone, as Crossman completed a 12-yard scoring pass to
Amarr Hunter with 9:46 left in the half.
Two drives later, St. John posted another touchdown pass – this time to Zach Poff for 55 yards – to add to their lead, 34-14.
The Britons picked apart the Scots on the following drive, as Crossman engineered a nine-play, 76-yard drive that resulted in an
Alex Trudell eight-yard run to cut the advantage to 34-21 headed into the break.
Albion made it interesting on the first possession of the third, as they cut the score to 34-27 on a 13-play, 65-yard drive resulting in Trudell running it in from five yards out.
However, the momentum was short-lived as Alma marched down the field and scored on a four-yard pass to make it 41-27.
The last score of the game came on a Williams three-yard run with 56 seconds left in the third.
A 35-minute lightning delay occurred with 27 seconds left in the fourth.
Crossman finished his inaugural collegiate start by going 29-of-51 for 326 yards and two scores, while
Tayshaun Nichols led the ground game with 14 carries for 79 yards in extended snaps at the position.
Sure-handed
Dilon Denison caught seven passes for 93 yards, while
Cameron Moore notched six for 88.
Ryan Deibis led all Briton defenders with 10 tackles, including two for a loss, and
Jayden Potter made eight stops in his first career start at safety.
