ALBION, Mich. -- An early spark from the Albion College women's soccer team wasn't enough to hold off a potent Calvin attack, as the Britons dropped a 5-1 decision to the Knights in Saturday's MIAA matchup at Alumni Field during Homecoming Weekend.
The Britons wasted no time getting on the board when
Mia Czarnowski found the back of the net in the fifth minute, giving Albion an early 1-0 lead. The second-year talent's rocket of a tally was her third of the season and set the tone for an energetic start in front of a full cadre of Albion supporters.
Calvin answered quickly, however, and managed to take control with two more goals in the first half to carry a 3-1 lead into the break. Despite the deficit, the Britons continued to push forward, creating several dangerous chances in the second half while battling to contain a relentless Knights offense. Calvin added two more markers in the second frame to give the game its final scoreline.
In goal,
Maddie Welsh played the full 90 minutes in goal and finished with six saves. Outside of Czarnowski,
Micaela Hohlbein and
Mary Coburn helped pace the offense with one shot on goal each.
With the result, Albion moves to 8-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in MIAA play. The Britons return to action on Wednesday when they travel to St. Mary's College for a 7 pm kickoff.
