ALBION, Mich. -- Down by two with one second left, the Albion men's basketball team had a chance.
Mason Brodi had an open look in the corner for a potential game-winning three pointer, but it clanked off the rim and gave Wisconsin Lutheran a 69-67 victory over the Britons at the Mike Turner College Classic at Kresge Gymnasium.
The Britons maintained a steady lead throughout the first half, climbing to a 10-point advantage, 24-14, with 9:48 left courtesy of a
BJ Hunter triple.
Michael Umeh's layup with 7:19 left in the period gave Albion their largest lead of the stanza, but the Warriors went on a 9-0 run to make it a four-point game with less than four minutes left.
Albion maintained their advantage at the break, 34-31.
After trailing by one early in the second, the Britons built their lead back up and eventually took a seven-point advantage, 48-41, on a Brodi layup with 12:43 remaining.
Wisconsin Lutheran began chipping at the lead afterwards, but while Albion notched an eight-point advantage with 7:42 left, the Warriors tied it up on a three-pointer, 59-59, with just under five minutes left.
Two more ties ensued, but the Britons could never break through for the rest of the game with a turnover and two
Truman King missed free throws that were key with 49 seconds left.
Umeh was named to the All-Tournament team after leading the squad with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while
