Softball sweeps Ferrum

FERRUM, VA. – On Sunday, the Albion College softball team had a terrific response, sweeping Ferrum College. The Britons took game one 8-4 before Gabrielle Hirkaway was masterful in game two for a 4-1 win. Head coach Leigh Ann LaFave has now reached 100 wins at Albion with the sweep.

GAME ONE: Albion 8 Ferrum 4

From the jump, the Britons managed to plate a pair in the top of the first inning. Natalie Kinney beat out an infield single and moved to third on an error by the Panthers. With the double steal on, Kinney's swipe of home gave Albion a 1-0 lead before an RBI groundout saw the Brits up by two.

Rachel Horecki lined a one-out single in the second and came around to score when Kinney drove her home on a base hit up the middle. In the home half of the inning, Ferrum struck for three runs, tying the game at three before a 4-3 lead for the hosts after four innings.

Albion exploded for a five-run sixth, as Jessie Anstandig and Kiersten Wilkin singled to start the frame. After another Ferrum error, Horecki singled through the left side, driving in Anstandig for the tying run. Parker Douglass followed, drawing a bases loaded pinch hit walk to push Albion ahead by one run.

Kinney and Megan Maiuri provided the Brits with insurance runs. Kinney drove in her second of the game, and Maiuri laced an opposite field single to drive in a pair.

In the circle, Lilly Zaskowski (1-1) earned the win. The sophomore tossed all seven innings, striking out six.

GAME TWO: Albion 4 Ferrum 1

The Britons once again scored in the top of the first to grab a 1-0 lead. Kinney's hot stretch continued with a single and came around to score on an RBI base hit by Kearney Miller. In the fourth, Albion doubled its lead when Kinney drove in Dylan Cardinale

Ferrum cut the lead in half, but Zaskowski answered with her bat to give the Brits insurance in the top of the seventh. Zaskowski blasted a two-run home run to push the visitors ahead 4-1.

Hirkaway was wonderful in the circle. The senior hurled seven innings of one run ball, allowing just three hits.

The Brits head to Myrtle Beach tomorrow to begin a 10-game stretch. Tomorrow Albion will take on Wilkes and Lancaster Bible at 1 and 3 p.m.
