Softball splits on Senior Day

ALBION – On Senior Day, the Albion College softball team split a pair of one run games with Saint Mary's College. The Britons won game one 5-4 before the Belles took the second 2-1.

GAME ONE: Albion 5 Saint Mary's 4

The Belles took a 1-0 lead in the second, but Albion immediately answered in the home half of the inning. Kearney Miller singled to left and advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch. Miller came around to score when Kiersten Wilkin ripped a single to left. 

In the fourth, Albion took a 3-1 lead. On her senior day, Rachel Horecki drove in a pair with a double down the left field line. Saint Mary's answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth, but once again, the hosts answered right back. 

Natalie Kinney led off the inning with a single and later scored on a base hit off the bat of Maiuri. Parker Douglass gave the Brits an insurance run, driving home Kayla Cole

Gabrielle Hirkaway earned the win in the circle, scattering six hits and going the distance. 

GAME TWO: Saint Mary's 2 Albion 1 (9 innings)

After the Belles led 1-0 for a majority of the game, the Britons rallied for a run in the top of the seventh. Kearney Miller led off the frame with a single and Parker Douglass lined a shot to right center. Kiersten Wilkin's groundout scored pinch runner Hannah Petty, forcing the bottom of the seventh. 

The Belles ended up winning in walkoff fashion in the nightcap.

After the twinbill, the Britons recognized its senior class of Dylan Cardinale, Rachel Horecki, Makayla Frost, Gabrielle Hirkaway, Parker Douglass, Hannah Petty, Kearney Miller, Rosie DiGiovanni and Megan Maiuri.

The season wraps up for the Brits on Sunday, when they host No. 5 Trine University for games at 2 and 4 p.m.
