ALBION, Mich. — It was an unbelievable play on the base paths.
Tied 1-1 and with courtesy runner
Jaden Henderson on second in the bottom of the sixth inning, Albion's
Allie Trantham hit a towering fly ball to right field near the warning track. The catch was made on the run, as Henderson tagged up and sprinted around third heading home.
The relay throw was not in time, as Henderson slid in safely as her teammates jumped for joy.
It proved to be the winning run in the Britons' 2-1 defeat of Calvin in Game 1, snapping a 17-game skid against the Knights dating back to 2018.
Game 2 resulted in an 8-1 victory for Calvin. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for the following day, but inclement weather anticipated in the area pushed the games back.
Game 1
Calvin got their first and only run in the first on a groundout.
However,
Lilly Zaskowski settled in the circle and retired seven of the next eight batters. From that point on, no other batters reached past first base the rest of the game.
Kiersten Wilkin homered on a ball that kept carrying out in left field to even up the score.
Then in the sixth,
Jessie Anstandig hit a leadoff double before Henderson came in as the courtesy runner. After Zaskowski struck out, Trantham hit the sacrifice fly to score Henderson from second.
Zaskowski forced a popout and struck out the game's final two batters to preserve the win. She only gave up five hits and fanned six as well.
The Britons managed only three hits all game, with Anstandig recording two of them. Calvin's Brooke Hunderman struck out 15 Britons and allowed just one walk in the circle.
Game 2
The Knights jumped all over the Britons in the first with three runs on an infield single, sacrifice fly and error.
Albion's lone score came in the third as
Emma Schramm touched the plate on a wild pitch.
Calvin added another in the third on a single, three more in the fifth on a double, groundout and single and their final in the sixth on another single.
The Britons had just two runners in scoring position all game and managed just five hits. Zaskowski got the loss after pitching the first 2.1 innings. Henderson and
Alaina Brown also saw time in the circle.
