ALBION, Mich. — Despite a valiant comeback attempt, the Albion men's lacrosse team fell short against Calvin, 17-15, at Alumni Field.
Down by six goals with 3:49 left in the third, the Britons rattled off five consecutive scores and got within one with 6:09 remaining in the final period.
After a Knight goal a minute and a half later,
Luke Schuemann found twine to bring it to within a score again, 16-15.
However, Calvin would seal the game with 2:31 left as the Britons could never recover.
Albion got the scoring started with a
Carson Farkas goal, but Calvin answered with three straight.
Cal Stearns and Schuemann helped tie the score at 3-3 as the Knights would tally one more to take the 4-3 advantage after the first.
They kept building on their lead with three goals to open the second. Stearns posted a score with 9:08 remaining in the half, but Calvin added two more scores. Each team found twine in the final minute of the game, including
Logan Bride who played in his first game of the season after an injury.
Connor Laidlaw also had a man-up goal with 20 seconds left as the score sat at 10-7 headed into the locker room.
Mathieu Champoux and
Carson Farkas scored for Albion before their comeback bid late in the third quarter.
Schuemann got the run started with 27 seconds left in the third. Then,
Logan Mozingo posted his first of the night with less than nine minutes in the fourth before Stearns took over with three straight scores to pull within one.
Stearns posted six goals, while Schuemann registered a hat trick.
TJ Antonino also recorded three assists, and
Caleb Howell played the final 38:19 in net and stopped eight shots.
