Prior to taking over at Holt, Slamer spent 21 seasons as head coach at Battle Creek Central from 1987-2007, where he also taught special education and physical education. He led the Bearcats to nine playoff appearances, eight conference titles and a school-record 128 wins during his tenure.

Slamer earned Detroit News Class A State Coach of the Year honors in 1990 as well as MHSFCA Regional Coach of the Year six times. He also was an assistant track and junior high basketball coach.

A four-year letterwinning tackle for Eastern Michigan, Slamer was named team captain as a senior in 1977 and was a two-time first-team Academic All-MAC selection. He also earned the Harold E. Sponberg Award twice, which is given to the Eagles' best down lineman who combines scholastic excellence and athletic achievement.

Slamer later earned his master’s degree in educational leadership from Western Michigan University in 1984.

After a brief stint in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts, Slamer began his career as the head freshman coach at Franklin Jr. High School in 1978. Kristin (Slamer-de St. Aubin) is the current head coach of the Britons' volleyball squad, and Sarah is married to Stephen Wasil, Albion's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach on the football team.
