Swimmers Challenge One Of MIAA's Elite Teams

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College placed first in five events, including three in the freestyle, as it came away with a 158-133 loss to Calvin College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association swimming & diving dual meet.

"A lot of people would consider Calvin the favorite to win the MIAA championship," Albion Coach Jake Taber said. "We raced pretty well. I was very encouraged for the first dual meet of the season. We didn't back down."

Brian Fiorillo won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and he joined Tom Parsons, Derek Bosko , and Brad Melpolder on the first-place 400 freestyle relay.

Melpolder, who returned Friday from a week-long trip to France to gain entrepreneurial experience with a group of students from Albion's Albion's Carl A. Gerstacker Institute for Business and Management, was impressive. He won the 200 freestyle and finished second in the 500 freestyle.

"We weren't exactly sure what to expect from Brad because he was on his feet the entire trip in France," Taber said. "He returned in time for the late afternoon practice yesterday. He is a gift athlete, and a great swimmer who does things the right way. He is intentional with the way he works."

Albion's best event was the 50 freestyle where Derek Bosko and Austin Bateman finished second and third, respectively, behind Fiorillo. Charlie Shinske and Parsons finished one-two in the 100 backstroke.

Albion will travel to Kalamazoo College for a Nov. 2 dual meet.
