Hooper, Fiorillo Pave Way For Record-Setting Day

KENOSHA, Wis. – Albion won the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays and Matt Hooper and Brian Fiorillo won individual events on the second day of the Carthage College Winter Classic.

The 200 medley team of Austin Bateman, Matt Hooper, Brian Fiorillo and Derek Bosko achieved a school record of 1:33.05. Bosko and Fiorillo joined Austin Bateman and Brad Melpolder for a meet record time of 3:06.19 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Hooper edged Olivet Nazarene's Calvin Price to win the 200 breaststroke. Hooper reached the wall in 2:07.65, just ahead of Price at 2:08.18.

Fiorillo, who achieved a meet record if 20.40 seconds during the morning preliminary of the 50 freestyle, won the event with an evening time of 20.79.

In other championship races, Bateman was third, Tom Parsons was fifth, Nick Deppner was seventh, and Charlie Shinske was ninth in the 100 backstroke. Josh Boren was fourth and A.J. Mattson ninth in the 400 IM. Bosko was fourth and Bateman was 10th in the 50 free. Melpolder and Bosko were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200 free.

Albion finished fourth in the meet's team standings. The Britons' 943 points was just four points behind third-place Carthage.
