OLIVET, Mich. - Albion College had the top two finishers in five events as it earned a 150-117 victory over Olivet College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's swimming & diving dual meet.
Albion put the exclamation point on a dual season in which it won four of five dual meets against MIAA rivals. The Britons now turn their attention to the league's championship meet, set for Feb. 12-15 at Calvin College.
Seniors Austin Bateman, Brian Fiorillo and Brad Melpolder won events in their final collegiate dual meet. Bateman was the only individual multi-event winner, placing first in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100 freestyle.
Melpolder was the winner in the 500 freestyle, Fiorillo sprinted to victory in the 50 freestyle. Fiorillo and Melpolder joined Josh Boren and Derek Bosko for first-place points in the 400 freestyle relay.
While the seniors led the way, youth was served as first-year swimmers Andrew Mattson and Charlie Shinske scored victories in individual events. Mattson was first to the wall in the 200 individual medley and he was the runner-up to Melpolder in the 500 freestyle. Shinske swam unopposed in the 100 backstroke.
Albion started the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Junior Landon Lefler, sophomores Boren and Tom Parsons, first-year swimmer Nick Deppner made up the squad. Parsons later finished second in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, Lefler was second in the 100 breaststroke, Deppner was second in the 50 freestyle, and Boren was second in the 200 backstroke.
