'We battled hard tonight'

KENOSHA, Wis. – Sebastian Tostado achieved his third school record of the weekend and he swam on the winning 400 medley and 200 freestyle relays as Albion College completed a successful run in the Carthage College Winter Classic.

Albion finished third in the team standings with 1,103 points. Carthage sat atop the team scoring with 1,718 points and Lake Forest College was second with 1,300.

"We battled hard and were mentally tough tonight," Albion Head Coach Jake Taber said. "It showed in the way we raced."

Tostado was the winner as Albion scored one-two finishes in the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke. He achieved the school record in the IM (1:54.27) with David Alday finishing second (1:56.42). Tostado finished the backstroke in 1:54.10 with Parker Belmore in second (1:56.12), Alday fourth (1:58.80) and Charlie Shinske seventh (2:02.54).

Belmore, Landon Lefler, Tostado, and Derek Bosko formed the medley relay team that just missed a school record. The Britons settled for a winning time of 3:29.53. Belmore, Alday, Tostado and Bosko former the freestyle relay team that posted a time of 1:24.82.

Bosko contributed first-place points by winning the 100 freestyle in 46.46 seconds. Nick Burris finished ninth in 49.34 seconds. Burris later finished fifth in the 100 butterfly (54.33 seconds).

Albion advanced a pair of swimmers to the final of the 200 breaststroke as Lucas Harder was the runner-up (2:09.64) and Lefler took seventh (2:20.07).

Blake Blair continued his breakthrough with a runner-up finish in the 1,650 freestyle. He completed the race in 16:36.98.

Taber said the takeaway from the meet is how the team came together.

"We've got a talented group of newcomers that have come in and not only complimented but also challenged our veterans," Taber said. "We were able to learn how the first-year swimmers respond to pressure situations."

Albion's next meet is Dec. 30 when it squares off against Transylvania (Ky.) University in Florida.
