KENOSHA, Wis. – First-year swimmer Madison Vaive helped Albion College put the exclamation point on a successful run in the Carthage College Winter Classic by helping the Britons to a win in the 200 freestyle relay.
Joined by sophomore Molly Blank and juniors Anna Hargrove and Lauren Pawelec, Vaive and the Britons achieved a winning time of 1:40.09 which was just a second shy of the school record established during the 2012-2013 season.
Vaive added points in the 100 freestyle, finishing fourth (55.56 seconds). Blank was sixth and Alex Wilkins finished 10th.
First-year swimmers Hailey Sambor and Sarah Kilbride joined Hargrove and Blank as the Britons started the night by finishing third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:06.95. Sambor added a fourth-place performance in the 200 breaststoke (2:32.27), finishing ahead of Claire Wittkowski who was seventh and Kylene Slocum who was eighth. Kilbride and Vaive finished third and seventh, respectively, in the 100 butterfly.
First-year swimmers scored in the 200 backstroke as Abigail Slager finished seventh (2:17.47) and Haley Wallis was ninth (2:22.39).
"We've got a talented group of newcomers that have come in and not only complimented but also challenged our veterans," Albion Head Coach Jake Taber said. "We were able to learn how the first-year swimmers respond to pressure situations."
Albion's next meet is Dec. 30 when it squares off against Transylvania (Ky.) University in Florida.
