Box Score STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point scored touchdowns on six of its last eight possessions to erase a 17-7 deficit and emerge with a 42-31 victory over Albion College on the opening week of Division III football action.
Running back Mike Czarnecki set up Albion's first half scoring. Czarnecki, who rolled up 114 rushing yards in the first half, ripped off a 52-yard run to set up a 23-yard field goal by Cody Lehman. His 37-yard run set the offense up at the Pointers' 17-yard line and Dominic Bona completed the drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Joe Mayone.
"I thought we started well, which is tough to do on the road in the opening game of the season," Albion Head Coach Craig Rundle said. "We moved the ball well and made some plays."
Czarnecki was held to 45 yards in the second half, finishing the night with 159 yards.
Bona played a role in Albion's second half scoring. He reached the end zone on a 39-yard run that put the Britons on top, 24-21, in the third quarter and he threw a 33-yard strike to Zach Brigham in the fourth. Bona completed 27 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns. Brigham hauled in 15 receptions (one shy of matching the school record) for 117 yards. Cody Crawford caught three passes for 74 yards.
The Pointers cashed in on interceptions for two of their three third-quarter touchdowns. Kyle Larson threw a pair of touchdown passes and he scored on a 1-yard run in the second half.
Linebackers Collin Ahrens and James Hartley led the Briton defense with 14 and 12 tackles, respectively.
"We played OK defensively in spurts, but we didn't play well after the turnovers," Rundle said.
Albion's home opener is Sept. 13 against Illinois Wesleyan University. Kickoff is set for 1 o'clock on the Schmidt-Fraser Field inside Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.
