GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Derek Bosko won the 50-yard freestyle and he helped Albion College to first place in both relay events as the men's swimming & diving team dove into two days of competition in a quadrangular meet with Calvin College, Carthage College and Ohio Northern University.
Bosko, the defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion, completed the 50 in 21.41 seconds. His time was nearly a quarter of a second ahead of Carthage's Lee Hollman.
Bosko produced a 20.73 split as Albion edged Calvin in the 200 freestyle relay. Parker Belmore, Sebastian Tostado, Tom Parsons and Bosko completed the relay in 1:25.98. That was .67 of a second ahead of Calvin.
"Tom Parsons gave us a nice split (21.45 seconds)," Head Coach Jake Taber said. "He was closing hard and let Derek do his thing."
Bosko's split was 46.98 as Albion won the 400 medley relay in 3:29.54. Nate Kozycki swam a 51.39 split to help Albion get a lead on Calvin and Bosko brought the race home. Tostado and Gerardo Huidobro swam the first two legs.
"It's a nice relay for this time of year," Taber said. "We were faster because Calvin was there. Huidobro swam a season-best split and Kozyicki swam a smart 100 fly."
Huidobro was the runner-up in the 500 free (4:52.77), Kozycki was fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:01.92), and Tostado was sixth in the 500 free (5:01.52).
Saturday morning events include the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and the 800 freestyle relay.
