Box Score OLIVET, Mich. – After dispatching Olivet College, 3-1, on a soggy Wednesday afternoon, Albion College begins its final push to qualify for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women's Soccer Tournament.
The Britons, who have gone undefeated over their last six matches to improve to 8-6-2 overall and 7-6-1 against MIAA rivals, vaulted into a tie with Alma College for fourth place in the league standings.
Albion's remaining road isn't easy with home contests against league leading Kalamazoo College (Saturday at 11 a.m.) and Adrian College (Monday at 7 p.m.).
Olivet had the early pressure, winning a corner kick and getting a shot on goal by Rachael Durocher.
Albion countered, scoring 38 seconds after goalkeeper Maggie Troost made the save on Durocher's attempt. Domenique Sarnecky produced her team-leading sixth goal of the season on a shot from inside the 6-yard box. Mikaela Ray was credited with the assist.
"Domenique was great today, linking the game and stretching Olivet's defensive shape," Albion Head Coach Eric Scott said.
Albion enjoyed a 5-minute stretch of controlling the action, but shots by Sarnecky and Jenna Urso sailed high of the goal. Urso and Emily Wolford also had their attempts blocked.
Albion got a lift in the 33rd minute when substitute Molly Hancock had a shot misplayed by the Olivet goalkeeper for her third goal of the season.
Sarah Feldpausch produced Olivet's goal with five minutes remaining, but Albion held off the home team on Kayla Paquette's third goal of the season with less than three minutes left.
Troost finished the day with five saves.
"It was an awesome team effort," Scott said. "The backline did a great job dealing with (Olivet's 15-goal scorer) Isabelle Leon and I thought we handled the elements well."
