Huttenlocher, Kozycki win MIAA Relays knockout events

HOLLAND, Mich. – Nate Kozycki and Jake Huttenlocher won the knockout rounds of their respective events as the Albion College men's swimming and diving team made a splash in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Relays.

Kozycki, an All-American in the 100-yard butterfly last season, edged Calvin College senior Jared Britton in the final in the 50 fly. Kozycki completed the finals in 24.58 seconds, finishing three hundredths of a second ahead of Britton.

Albion had the top three swimmers in the 50 breaststroke. Huttenlocher set a time of 27.86 seconds in the semifinals, taking Tyler Kimbrell (28.12) to the finals. Mac Robertson was third in the semifinals (28.63).

Huttenlocher was a bit slower in the finals, reaching the finish in 28.04, but that was good enough for a 1 ½ second victory over Kimbrell.

Ian Moran was third in the 50 back and Len Ciemniecki was fourth in the 50 free.

In relay events:

  • Robertson and Evan Wonner joined women Rileigh Eding and Hannah Erickson for first place in the mixed 200 freestyle relay (1:32.80)
  • Huttenlocher and Kozycki joined Anna Moore and Nicole McCann in a runner-up finish in the mixed 200 medley relay (1:41.66)
  • Kozycki, Moran, Kimbrell and Huttenlocher swam to a runner-up finish in the 400 medley relay (3:45.28)
  • Wonner, Ciemniecki, Tommy Trueax and Robertson earned a runner-up finish in the 500 progressive relay (4:16.61)

"The team swam well with the tough week of training we had," Albion Head Coach Nick Stone said. "This meet is made to get a lot of swims done in a short period of time, which can be very taxing, but the Britons maintained energy and raced well against the conference competition."

The Albion swimmers and divers return to the pool tomorrow for a MIAA dual meet against Kalamazoo College.
