Britons run by Kalamazoo in MIAA football action

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Jacob Clark rushed for a career-high 174 yards and two touchdowns, Kyle Thomas added a pair of rushing touchdowns and John Wester returned an interception 90 yards for his first score at the collegiate level as Albion College earned a 37-17 victory over Kalamazoo College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association football action at Angell Field.

Albion set the tone for the day early on.

Mitchell Arendsen wrapped up a tackle for loss and Malik Bozell collected a sack as the defense forced a three-and-out on Kalamazoo's first possession.

The Kalamazoo punt went just 14 yards, setting the Albion offense up at the Kalamazoo 35-yard line. It took Albion just five plays to cover the distance with Thomas going the final six yards on the ground for the first score of the day.

Albion's defense yielded just one first down in the first quarter.

Albion's offense had another short field to work with early in the second quarter, taking over at the Kalamazoo 47. Quarterback Jack Bush hooked up with Kolby Canfield for seven yards to pick up a third down conversion and Patrick Czarnecki gained 12 yards on the ground to move the ball to the red zone. Thomas finished the 10-play drive with a 6-yard run on third and goal and the Britons led 14-0.

Albion extended the lead to 21-3 late in the second quarter when Clark capped a five-play drive with a 1-yard run. The score was set up with two big plays: Bush connected with Marlon Martin for 25 yards and Clark ripped off a 52-yard run.

Josh Castillo kicked a 36-yard field goal, Clark scored on a 1-yard run and Wester's interception return accounted for Albion's second half scoring.

Albion's offense generated 397 total yards. Bush completed 15-of-22 passes for 136 yards. Martin and Isaiah Gibson hauled in five receptions apiece.

The defense wrapped up eight tackles for loss and picked off two passes (Drew Shafer collected the other interception). David Aukema, Jarius Ballard and Bozell secured the Albion sacks. Arendsen finished with two tackles for loss.

Albion (4-2 overall, 1-2 MIAA) will play its final two home games in consecutive weeks. The Britons have an Oct. 26 date vs. Adrian College and a Nov. 2 date vs. Trine University. Both games kick off at 1 p.m. at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu
