MIAA Swim/Dive Championship: Thursday recap

HOLLAND, Mich. – Thursday was expected to be a low scoring day for Albion College in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship.

The Britons outperformed expectations, however, advancing multiple swimmers to the finals in every individual event.

Jake Huttenlocher provided the headline, coming back in the freestyle leg to win the title in the 200-yard individual medley. The sophomore from Shelby Township, Mich., established a lifetime best time of 1:50.81 to edge Dan Clyde (Hope College) by six hundredths of a second.

Connor Robertson, fourth, and Tyler Kimbrell, seventh, advanced to the championship final.

Albion also scored bronze medals in the 500 freestyle (Mac Robertson) and 50 freestyle (Evan Wonner).

The Britons had four swimmers on the block for the 500. Following Robertson were Drew Fogel (fourth), Tommy Trueax (fifth) and Chris Breen (seventh).

Wonner led Len Ciemniecki (fifth) to the finish in the 50.

Wonner, Huttenlocher, Robertson and Ciemniecki also combined for a silver medal in the 200 freestyle relay.

Albion capped the swimming with a solid B cut time in the 400 medley relay. Ian Moran, Huttenlocher, Nate Kozycki and Ciemniecki raced to second place in 3:19.23.

Not to be outdone, senior diver Jake Burris completed a four-year run of MIAA championships on the 1-meter board. Burris fought through a slump in the third and fourth rounds to finish with a 500.20 total. In the processm Burris became just the third man to win the MIAA 1-meter title all four years.

Jonathan Cronick was sixth.
