Fast start powers Albion to Sunday women's soccer victory

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College defeated Manchester University, 3-0, in non-league women's soccer action at Alumni Field on Sunday, however there was the feeling the Britons could have scored even more.

The Britons controlled possession 64 percent of the time, and most of that came on the attacking half of the field. In fact, Albion possessed the ball in its defensive quarter of the field only six percent of the day.

Riley Burnette ignited Albion's fast start by scoring in the first minute of the match. She received a pass from Clare Kelley and had space to dribble a couple of times before sending a blast in the net.

Burnette also scored on a blast from 20 yards out in the 54th minute. She leads the team with four goals so far this season.

Kaitlyn Piontkowsky had Albion's other goal, finishing a pass from Kelley in the 17th minute.

Helped by substitute Kailey Dodge, Albion won the battles and races to the ball in the second half despite playing on consecutive days.

Goalkeeper Hannah Reamer, assisted by the back line of Lily Miller Maggie Shrader, Claire Stoddard and Lexi Taylor, got credit for the clean sheet. Reamer collected two saves.

Albion, now 3-1 on the year, will hit the road for its next four matches. The Britons begin to rack up miles on the bus Wednesday when the travel to Cleveland for an evening match at Case Western Reserve University.
