HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Albion College men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a a tri-meet on Friday evening. Both teams defeated Olivet, but fell to Hope College. The women defeated Olivet, 188-60, while falling to the Flying Dutch, 162-109. On the men's side, Albion secured the 178-77 win over Olivet before dropping to Hope 161-108.
Both teams saw improvements in their times from last week's dual at Calvin, being back in the pool for just two weeks after the holiday break.
Sage Gettings won the 100 yard freestyle, touching the wall at 52.93. She also took a no-doubt first place finish in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:14.41. The next opponent finished in 2:29.17.
In the 400 yard IM, junior Samantha Swingewood won the event with a time of 4:38.42. She narrowly missed the school record in the 200 yard fly, finishing at 2:07.30.
Junior Connor Robertson's time of 1:58.77 won him the 200 yard backstroke.
Jake Huttenlocher handily won the 200 yard breaststroke at 2:09.18 -- seven seconds faster than the runner-up.
The Albion men swept the 200 yard IM, with Huttenlocher (2:00.04), Robertson (2:02.88) and Declan Tharp (2:04.51) going 1-2-3.
The women's 400 yard medley relay team of Sarah Griffiths, Katy Henning, Gettings and Hannah Erickson took second with a time of 4:08.26. In the same event, the men's team of Cole Nelson, Jake Huttenlocher, Tharp and Nate Cobb placed second (3:34.56).
Tharp narrowly took second place in the 100 yard free with a time of 49.28 while Robertson's time of 54.53 was good for second in the 100 yard backstroke. Nelson added a second place finish in the 100 yard fly with a time of 53.27.
Courtney Swingewood and Henning finished 2-3 in the 100 yard breaststroke with times of 1:10.84 and 1:13.60. Swingewood also placed in the 200 yard breaststroke, finishing third in 2:32.79.
Cobb took third in the men's 200 yard free, coming in at 1:49.57. Noah Mitchell was just behind him in fourth, touching the wall at 1:50.28.
With a time of 12:07.96, Emma Henninges took third in the 1000 yard free. Junior Ashley Ketchum was second in the 500 yard free (5:34.79).
Freshman Russell Brown's time of 10:18.09 was good for second in the 1000 yard free. Behind him in third place was Ethan Henninges (11:02.36). Brown also finished third in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.34.
Taking third place in the 50 yard free was freshman Emily Snyder (25.40).
In the 1-meter dive, Justin Huttenlocher finished third (230.40).
Both teams took first in the 400 yard free relay. The women's team of Erickson, Griffiths, Snyder and Gettings finished in 3:43.39 while the men's team of Evan Wonner, Cobb, Brendan Ritchie and Jake Huttenlocher clocked in at 3:17.77.
The teams are slated for another tri-meet on Feb. 13 at Calvin University. It will be the last tune-up before the MIAA Championship. The schedule is always subject to change, and we will keep you posted at gobrits.com.
