ALBION -- Off to their best start in the
Eric Scott era, the Albion College women's soccer team handily defeated Olivet College, 6-1, on Wednesday evening. Winners of seven straight, the Britons improve to 7-1 overall, 2-0 in the MIAA.
All six goals were scored by different Britons --
Megan Loney,
Avery Campbell,
Rayna Edwards,
Quinn Natschke,
Kaitlyn Piontkowsky and
Ashlyn Wetzel.
The 7-1 start is the best start through eight games since 2007, when Albion opened the season 6-1-1. Flip the calendar back to 2002 to find the last seven game win streak, where the Brits finished out the year 16-5.
Loney opened the scoring off a beautiful free kick. Her third goal of the season gave the hosts a 1-0 lead through 18 minutes of play.
The next two Albion goals came within a minute of each other. An unassisted goal from Campbell marked the sophomore's second of the season. 45 seconds later, the Comets were whistled for a foul in the box. Edwards stepped up and hammered home the penalty kick, increasing the lead to 3-0 midway through the first half.
An Olivet goal was quickly answered by Natschke. Both
Anna Morris and Piontkowsky assisted Natschke's second goal of the year.
In the final minutes of the first half, Piontkowsky netted her fifth collegiate goal -- first of the year -- on a set piece. A free kick taken by Morris was followed by a beautiful header by Piontkowsky to beat the Olivet keeper. The assist was Morris's second of the match.
Coming out of the half with a 5-1 advantage, Wetzel scored off a feed from Campbell to cap off the scoring for the Brits.
Holding all of the momentum in the contest, Albion outshot the Comets, 20-2.
Romee Natschke (6-1) picked up the win in goal.
With conference play fully underway, the Britons will travel to Alma on Saturday afternoon. Kick off against the Scots is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
