No bark, all bite: football upset by Bulldogs

ADRIAN, Mich. -- From the start things looked bleak, as the Albion College football team was stunned in their MIAA opener, 21-7, by Adrian College. It marks the first loss for the Britons since the 2019 season as the Brits move to 4-1 overall, 0-1 in the MIAA.

Kyle Thomas was 14 for 27, good for 150 yards and one touchdown. Both Justin Thomas (74) and Kolby Canfield (72) led the Briton receivers. Phillip Jones-Price tacked on 77 yards on the ground for Albion.

Defensively, Kalil Brown led the way with 12 tackles. Mitch Arendesen added nine tackles, including three for loss.

After Albion won the toss and deferred, the Bulldogs marched straight down for a touchdown. A 13-play, 80-yard drive put the Britons in a 7-0 hole early on.

Eating clock with another possession over six minutes, Adrian tacked on another TD on their next possession to open the second quarter. This time, an 11-play, 86-yard drive gave the hosts a 14 point advantage.

It took just one play for the Bulldogs to boost their advantage, as a 79-yard touchdown capped off the scoring for the half, giving the hosts a 21-0 edge at the half.

Despite outgaining the Bulldogs, the Brits had nothing to show for it, as many drives stalled in Adrian territory.

The lone Briton touchdown came early in the fourth, when Thomas connected with Canfield for a 12-yard pass. A Jackson Cooney PAT was good, but those would be the only points Albion would get.

Hunter Williams had three punts for 96 yards, including two landing inside the 20.

Despite the loss in the MIAA opener, Albion still has life for a repeat title. The Britons will look to respond next week at Kalamazoo College. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
