ALBION -- Despite going toe to toe with one of the region's top powers, the Albion College men's basketball team came up just short to Heidelberg University, 87-83, on Tuesday night.
Cortez Garland led Albion with 17 points, seven assists and four steals. Reigning MIAA Athlete of the Week,
MJ Barnes, registered 16 points while
Justin McAbee totaled 15.Â
Heidelberg held the lead for much of the first half, holding a six point advantage with three minutes to play before halftime. Three free throws by
Devin Holmes cut the deficit to three. A persistent Albion offense battled for the remainder of the half, eventually taking the lead before the break.Â
With Garland driving, the senior was fouled and sank both free throws before the half, as the Britons took a 44-43 lead into the locker room.
The Student Princes exploded out of the half, building their lead to as many as 10 points. For most of the second half, Heidelberg stifled any Albion run with a bucket at the other end, or forcing the Britons to commit turnovers.Â
With 6:40 on the clock,
Khy Winston buried a three to cut the Heidelberg lead to six. Baskets from Garland and McAbee brought the Britons to within two, reviving life into the hosts.Â
With Heidelberg up three,

The Britons got 21 points from its bench compared to Heidelberg's 36.
