CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A career night from
Cierra Cole and a double-double from
Dareonna Little helped the Albion College women's basketball team survive a fourth-quarter scare, defeating Case Western Reserve University, 68-64 on Wednesday night. Cole dropped 14 points while Little scored 16 and brought down 14 boards.
Cole ignited the Britons offensively by draining her first four triples of the contest, forcing the Spartans to pay attention to the threat from deep. Albion gained a 16-10 lead in the first quarter before CWRU made a small run, trimming the lead to one.
In the final seconds of the first, a beautiful transition jumper by
Lolo Reed was banked home, pushing the Brits ahead 18-15 after one.
A small run by Albion helped the visitors extend their lead to double digits in the second.
Riley Davis started the run with a jumper, followed by a pair of free throws off the hand of Little. Little followed the next possession with an offensive board and bucket, giving Albion a seven point lead.
With 6:12 before the half,
Elena Welker knocked down a corner three, boosting the Brit lead to 27-17. The junior finished with 13 points and dished out seven assists.
Down the stretch, Albion worked to keep CWRU at a distance, as two more Little free throws put Albion up, 37-25 at halftime.
Little continued to dominate out of the half, sinking three straight buckets. Albion led by as many as 16 in the period.
CWRU cut the lead to 10 points, but once more, Albion had an answer. As time expired in the third, junior
Angelina Mendieta buried a clutch three off a feed from Davis, giving the Britons a 59-46 lead with one quarter to play.
The Spartans remained persistent throughout the fourth, cutting into Albion's lead and forcing the Britons into turnovers. CWRU would eventually have a chance to tie or win the game in the final moments, but clutch defense by Albion helped the Brits preserve the lead.
Reed was fouled with 0.2 seconds on the clock, knocking down both free throws and icing the win.
Albion worked to keep possessions alive, grabbing 25 offensive boards in the contest.
Led by Cole, the Brits knocked down 43 percent of its 3-pointers.
The Britons will have a week off before commencing conference play on Dec. 1 at St. Mary's. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
