ADRIAN, Mich. –
Elena Welker exploded for a career-high 25 points, leading the Albion College women's basketball team to an 89-58 win over Adrian College on Saturday afternoon. After being tied at 19 to end the first quarter, the Britons outscored the Bulldogs by at least nine points in the remaining three quarters.
Welker, a junior, scored 25 points while dishing out three assists. Sophomore forward and reigning MIAA Athlete of the Week,
Dareonna Little, scored 15 points and brought down five rebounds for the Brits.
Riley Davis collected a game-high eight rebounds in the win.
Improving to 9-1 overall, Albion has won its sixth straight contest.
An early 9-2 Albion lead was quickly answered by the Bulldogs, rallying to take a 14-12 lead. With 3:45 remaining in the period,
Romee Natschke found Welker for three, giving the lead right back to the Brits.
As time expired in the first,
Daniah Beavers snatched an offensive board and got the putback to go in time, knotting the game at 19 to end the opening quarter.
The Bulldogs scored the first five points in the second quarter, but Albion was ready with a response. Six of the next eight Albion points came from Little to spark a run.
With 3:02 before the half, a bucket and a pair of free throws from Welker lifted Albion to a three point lead.
Lolo Reed knocked down a pair of free throws with just over a minute to play. The sophomore turned in a solid stat line, scoring 11 points, grabbing four rebounds, dishing out six assists and adding four steals.
Coming out of the half with a 10-point lead, Davis buried a three to open the third and continue the momentum in Albion's favor. Two more Reed free throws and another transition basket by Welker extend the Briton lead to 17.
Layups from
Cierra Cole and
Becca Ross pushed Albion over the 20-point mark, leading 58-35 with 3:49 to play in the third. Ross was the other Briton in double figures, scoring 11 in the victory.
The rest of the contest remained in favor of the Britons, who remain perfect in conference play with a 3-0 record.
Once the Bulldogs found a way to slow Welker's momentum, Albion looked inside to Little, Davis and Beavers. The Britons outscored the hosts in the paint, 50-20.
Albion forced Adrian to commit 21 turnovers, which led to 30 points for the Britons.
Albion held a strong edge in the battle on the boards, backed by Davis (8) Beavers (6) and
Audrey DeWaters (5).
The Britons will host Franklin College on Monday for a 6 p.m. tip off. It will be their last game before the holiday until they resume play on Dec. 29.
