ALBION -- A pair of hustle plays by freshman
Avery Kasanic proved to be vital, as the Albion College women's soccer team prevailed over Kalamazoo College, 1-0, on Tuesday evening. The win is the first over the Hornets since Oct. 29, 2016.
Junior
Rayna Edwards scored the lone goal in the 29th minute -- her third of the season and eighth of her career.Â
In goal,
Romee Natschke made two saves in the clean sheet. She was aided by a great back line all night, led by
Anna Morris,
Colette Askins and
Avery Campbell.Â
Midway through the first half, the Hornets had a breakaway and looked as if they would get on the board first. Kasanic bolted back on defense and made a clean tackle before the Kalamazoo player could get a shot off, keeping the score locked at zero.Â
A few minutes later, Kasanic won a 50/50 ball in Kalamazoo territory. The win led to a two on one break. Kasanic made a perfect pass to Edwards, who beat the keeper and gave the hosts a 1-0 lead.
In the 74th minute,
Mia Crawford had a great look at the goal. The freshman's shot was barely saved by a kick save from the Kalamazoo goalkeeper, allowing the score to remain at 1-0.Â
Down the stretch, two Hornet looks at the goal came up just short, rattling off the crossbar.Â
"Kalamazoo is a very organized and well-coached team," said head coach
Eric Scott. "We got a level of competitiveness out of our girls tonight that we've been looking for."
That level of competitiveness extends the win streak to six, as the Brits are now 6-1 overall.Â
Albion outshot the Hornets 17-9 in the match.
The Britons will be off for a little over a week before they are back on the pitch on Oct. 6. Albion will host Olivet for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
