KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Albion College women's soccer team will return to Michigan with two wins, after defeating host Carthage College, 2-1, on Sunday evening. Albion was the lone school to post a 2-0 record at the Battle of the Border event that was held in Wisconsin.
On the young season, the Brits improve to 2-1 overall as the Firebirds slip to 1-2.
Just over a minute into the match, junior
Rayna Edwards scored her first goal of the season to give the Britons an early lead. Edwards used her speed to get past the Carthage defense and push Albion in front for the second straight match.
Carthage found the equalizer on a breakaway in the 9th minute. The hosts had an opportunity to take the lead midway through the first half with a wide open shot, but a great save by
Romee Natschke kept the score locked at one.
In the 53rd minute,
Megan Loney found
Anna Morris for the junior's first goal of the season. Morris's strike would prove to be the deciding factor in the contest.
Natschke was stellar between the pipes for the Britons. The junior totaled 11 saves in the match.
Carthage held the edge in both shots (20-15) and corner kicks (6-1).
Albion will travel to the Buckeye State on Saturday to face off against Hiram. Kickoff against the Terriers is scheduled for 4 p.m.
