Swim and dive returns to action

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Back in the pool for the first time in nearly two months, the Albion College swimming and diving teams dropped competitions against Calvin University. The women fell, 185-115 and the men dropped, 199.5–97.5

The women's 400 meter free relay team capped off the day with a win, coming in at 3:37.91, composed of Hannah Fathman, Emily Merucci, Samantha Swingewood and Sage Gettings. Gettings also earned a win in the 100 yard fly with a time of 1:01.80.

Fathman, a freshman, won the 50 yard free for the Brits (24.02).

Swingewood and Ashley Ketchum went 1-2 in the 500 yard free. Swingewood finished with a time of 5:18.94 as Ketchum clocked in at 5:32.66.

The senior Swingewood added another win, this one coming in the 200 yard fly. She and Sarah Griffiths finished the event in the top two spots. 

Declan Tharp won both the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes. The junior swam a 1:00.25 and a 2:13.93.

In the 100 yard free, Fathman and Gettings went 1-2, with finishes of 53.96 and 55.15.

Merucci also added a second place finish in the 200 yard backstroke, coming in at 2:16.25.

With a time of 2:30.87, freshman Mattie Smith placed second in the 200 yard breaststroke. She also finished in the same spot in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:07.04).

Noah Mitchell took third in the 500 yard free with a time of 5:03.94.

Tharp led the charge in the 200 yard IM, winning the event with a time of 1:59.95. Erik Halboth was two spots behind him, clocking in at 2:05.58.

In the same event on the women's side, Courtney Swingewood and Smith ended in second and third. 

Junior Justin Huttenlocher won both diving events. He scored a 253.05 in the 1-meter and a 239.93 in the 3-meter. 

Freshman Madeline Rais took third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 152.47.

The Britons saw members from each team taking third in the 200 yard free. On the men's side, it was AJ Zako and Ketchum for the women.

In the 1000 yard free, Kelvin Crone-Willis and Bryn Cavanaugh each took second. 

Drew Fogel finished third in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.71.

The men's 200 yard medley relay team of Cole Nelson, Andrew Jonna, Tharp and Brendan Ritchie placed third with a time of 1:38.80.

With a time of 1:49.42, the women's 200 yard medley relay team saw a second place finish. 

Two of the men's 400 yard free relay teams finished in the top three, taking second and third. 

Albion returns to action on Jan. 22 when they host Aquinas for Senior Day. The meet will begin at 1 p.m.
