Game Recap: Football |

No. 20 football off to best start since 1996

ANGOLA, Ind. – It definitely wasn't pretty, but we'll take it.

Down to the absolute wire, the No. 20 Albion College football team prevailed on the road at Trine University, 20-19. Two-way player James Bloomfield hauled in an interception at the Briton 46 yard line with 40 seconds left to win the game for the visitors.

Jeremiah Major and Nick Fannon led a gritty defense. Major recorded a game-high 13 tackles, 2.5 TFL and a huge sack late in the game. Fannon notched 11 tackles and an impressive 4.5 TFL, three for sacks.

In addition to Bloomfield's interception, his roommate and best friend, Stephen Douglas, had a pick six for the Brits.

Trine started the game with the ball and immediately marched downfield to set up a field goal attempt. The 38-yard attempt sailed wide, giving the ball to the Britons with zeros on the scoreboard. On that possession, Albion threw an interception that was returned to the Briton 31. It later set up a 32-yard field goal, this one good, giving Trine a 3-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Another Albion turnover gave the ball right back to the hosts. Trine opened up the second quarter with an 11-yard touchdown, boosting their lead to 10-0. Albion could not find its offensive groove, as it marked the longest the Brits would go in a game before scoring this season.

The next Trine possession, Douglas stepped in front of a pass and returned it 65 yards to put the Britons on the board. The PAT failed, but Albion crept closer, cutting the deficit to 10-6. On the ensuing Trine possession, the Thunder tacked on a field goal to go up 13-6.

Late in the half, Albion was able to knot the score before the break. Getting the ball at the Trine 5, Jack Bush connected with Mark Tocco for a touchdown. Jackson Cooney's PAT was good, as the teams went into the locker room tied at 13.

Tocco and Bush connected yet again on the first drive of the third quarter, this time from six yards out. The 20-13 lead would see the final points Albion would score for the remainder of the contest. All six of Trine's points came in the third quarter – both off field goals. The Britons were able to keep the Thunder out of the end zone in the second half, preserving the visitors lead.

Trading possessions down the stretch, neither team was truly able to find its groove. Trine's two-minute drill offense put the hosts into Albion territory, with more than enough time on the clock and timeouts to spare. On a third and 10, Bloomfield had his signature moment, cutting in front of a Trine pass and allowing the Albion offense to go into victory formation.

The 7-0 start is the best in program history since 1996. Albion now sits a perfect 3-0 in the conference with three tough opponents remaining.

Next Saturday, Albion will host Adrian College. Game time against the Bulldogs is slated for noon.
