CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Albion College men's basketball team dropped its season opener 50-42 to the University of Chicago.
Fred Garland and
Ken Thomas each scored a dozen points for the Brits.
Chicago built a 10 point lead early in the first half, but Albion charged right back to take a lead into the half. Throughout the final 9:20 of the opening period, the Britons outscored Chicago, 14-2 to take a 26-24 lead at half.
Jonathan Armstead-Wilkerson started the comeback with a layup, before
Fred Garland sank a pair of free throws. Another Armstead-WIlkerson layup cut the deficit to four with 6:16 left in the half.
Down four with 2:11 in the first, the final two minutes Albion was in total control. Garland's layup cut the Maroon lead to two points before another basket by the senior tied the game at 24. With four seconds on the clock,
Khy Winston made a shot to put the Britons up for the first time in the game.
In the second half, the Maroons held control to regain the lead and hold it for the remainder of the contest. Chicago held Albion to just 16 points in the second half.
Albion wraps up the weekend with a 4 p.m. game against Muskingum tomorrow. The game will also be hosted by Mt. St. Joseph.
