Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Garland's career-high gives men's hoops resounding win

Fred Garland dropped 18 points in Sunday's win

CINCINNATI, Ohio – An early deficit was quickly erased by the Albion College men's basketball team, defeating Muskingum 70-55 on Sunday afternoon. Junior guard Fred Garland scored a career-high 18 points, while Jonathan Armstead-Wilkerson chipped in with 17.

As a team, the Britons recorded 11 steals, led by Armstead-Wilkerson's four.

Off to a slow start, the Muskies pulled ahead 11-2 in the early minutes. Following a media timeout, the Brits answered with five straight points from Armstead-Wilkerson to get back within two possessions.

Midway through the half, Armstead-Wilkerson gave Albion a 16-14 lead with a jumper – a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game. With 19 seconds on the clock, Garland knocked down a deep 3-pointer to push the Albion lead to double digits. A late Muskingum basket cut the Albion advantage back to single digits, but the momentum – and the lead – would be in favor of the Britons at halftime, 36-27.

Out of the half, Muskingum rallied to close the gap to six, but a basket by senior Ken Thomas halted the momentum. On the next Albion possession, Khy Winston found Armstead-Wilkerson for a three.

Maintaining a double-digit lead for a majority of the second half, Garland single handedly boosted the Albion energy with a steal and a dunk in transition.

Late in the game, Albion sealed the deal on an and-one by Chanse Crittendon. Crittendon finished with 11 points off the bench.

Garland was 7-10 from the floor, including a 3-5 margin from beyond the arc.

Ken Thomas brought down a game-high 14 rebounds in the win. The senior finished one point shy of a double-double.

Albion will be in action on Saturday for its home opener. The Britons will host Ohio Wesleyan for a 2 p.m. contest.
