No. 20 football sends seniors out with win

ALBION – Talk about a tale of two halves.

After struggling on all sides of the ball, the No. 20 Albion College football team rallied in the third quarter to turn a halftime deficit into a 35-24 victory over Olivet College. Albion trailed 17-7 at the half, but led 28-17 by the end of the third quarter.

The Britons improve to 9-0, 5-0 in the MIAA. Olivet drops to 5-4, 1-4 in league play.

Sophomore Luke Lovell was 17 of 24 for 243 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 46 yards with his legs. He was helped out by Ryan Roberts's 52 yard rushing day, and Mark Tocco's 66 yard receiving afternoon.

Seniors Jeremiah Major and Brady Frasier shined on their Senior Day. Major led the Britons with 12 total tackles, while Frasier picked up a career-high 10.

Olivet carried the momentum for the entire first quarter and for the first part of the second quarter. Costly penalties saw the Britons lose yardage, unable to find any offensive rhythm. Albion finally got a three and out on defense, getting the ball and their own 25.

On the new possession, big pickups from Tocco and Nick Christian saw the Britons move the chains and revive life back into the offense. Lovell scampered for a 20-yard gain, putting the hosts into Olivet territory. Three plays later, Phillip Jones-Price ran up the middle for a 9-yard touchdown to finally put the Brits on the board. Logan Grwinski's PAT cut the deficit to 10 points – a score that would roll into halftime.

Receiving the ball out of the half, the Comets looked to tack onto their advantage. With other ideas, the Briton defense forced another three and out deep in Olivet territory. For the second week, Greg Piscopink blocked a punt, recovered by the Britons at the Olivet 10, sparking a wave of enthusiasm into the crowd and the bench.

Capitalizing on the great field position, Lovell connected with Juarae Robinson on a third and goal for a 4-yard TD. Grwinski's point after put the Britons within one possession.

Albion's defense continued to put massive pressure on the Comets, forcing yet another three and out. On the ensuing possession, Lovell found Brendan Teal over the middle for a 20-yard strike. The Brits then received two big chunk plays – one from Tocco and one from Teal. The second to Teal with a beautiful 20-yard touchdown pass in the back corner of the end zone, giving Albion the lead for good. Grwinski sailed another PAT through the uprights for a 21-17 advantage early in the third.

With 3:10 remaining in the third quarter, Robinson made another incredible catch – this one a 30-yard touchdown from Lovell to increase the lead to double digits.

In the fourth quarter, using clock wisely, the Brits put together a long drive that culminated in a Ryan Nolan touchdown. Lovell threw a strike over the middle to Nolan, who bounced off a defender and past the goal line for a 35-17 lead.

Olivet's touchdown came late in the contest. Opting for the onside kick, the ball was recovered on a stellar grab by Tocco to seal the win on Senior Day.

The win marks five straight over the Comets.

Hunter Williams was key to the Albion win, punting five times for 188 yards. Three of his punts landed inside the 20, and two went 50+ yards.

The Britons were a perfect four of four in red zone scores. They also limited Olivet to just five of 17 third down conversions.

A third straight MIAA title is on the line next week in Alma. The Britons hit the road to face off against the undefeated Scots. Kick off in Alma is slated for 1 p.m.
