Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Balanced effort puts MBB back in the win column

Six players scored at least eight points in Friday's win.

ANGOLA, Ind. – Finally getting healthy and seeing its young roster more experienced, the Albion College men's basketball team is back in the win column. Backed by three players in double figures, the Britons snapped a five game losing skid, defeating Mt. St. Joseph 70-57.

Junior Fred Garland led Albion with 15 points and seven rebounds. Ken Thomas added 14 points and a career-best five assists in the win. Zak Krueger was the final Albion player in double figures, scoring a career-high 10 points.

From the tip, the Britons controlled the tempo, building their lead to as many as 20 in the first half. Two 3-pointers by Beck Willems helped Albion gain a large lead early on. MSJ battled throughout the final two minutes, going on a small run to cut into the lead. However, with Garland leading the charge, the Brits took a 38-25 lead into halftime.

Chipping away at the Albion lead, the Lions cut the deficit to five with 11:31 on the clock. The Brits immediately answered with a bucket by Thomas and a triple off the hand of Phil Ragan III, extending the advantage back to 10.

That basket would be enough for Albion to hold on down the stretch, as the Lions never got within single digits for the remainder of the game. With 1:44 to play, a Jonathan Armstead-Wilkerson steal led to a thunderous fast break dunk by Garland to seal the win for the Britons.

Armstead-Wilkerson and freshman Kameron Mayes finished with nine points apiece.

Capitalizing off MSJ miscues and live ball turnovers, Albion scored 17 fast break points and 29 off turnovers. The Lions committed 19 turnovers, compared to a season-low nine by the Britons.

Albion moves to 2-6, while MSJ drops to 2-7.

Tomorrow, the Brits will return to Angola for their second game of the Saint Andrew's Classic. At 4 p.m., Albion will take on Lawrence University for their final game before the holiday break.
