Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Offensive struggles hurt men's basketball

ALBION – A poor shooting night hindered the Albion College men's basketball team in a 71-63 loss to Trine University. With the loss, the Brits fall to 10-10 overall, 6-3 in the MIAA.

The Britons gained a small 8-3 lead early on, but Trine worked its way back to turn the score into a 9-8 advantage. Four points from Devin Holmes followed by buckets by Fred Garland and Ken Thomas helped Albion take a slim lead.

With the visitors holding a 15-12 lead, Thomas went to the line and sank both free throws. The junior led the Britons with 14 points, going six for eight from the free throw line. An MJ Barnes jumper coupled by another Thomas basket saw the Britons leading by three with 7:44 before the half.

The teams would trade leads for the remainder of the half, with neither team able to find a true momentum. A Barnes baseline jumper in the final seconds trimmed the Trine lead to 28-27 at the break.

With 10:43 on the clock, Barnes knocked down the first three of the night for the Britons. Albion would later add to its lead with a layup from Cortez Garland, leading 50-42 with nine minutes remaining. Garland was the only other Briton to finish in double figures, scoring 13 points.

Four straight points by the MIAA's leading scorer, Nick Bowman, put Trine within three. With 4:51 to play, Bowman tied the game at 56 as momentum shifted in favor of the visitors.

Trine closed out the final 3:40 on a 13-5 run, sealing the non conference victory.

Albion has dropped the last six matchups against the Thunder, including postseason.

The Thunder was able to capitalize off of Albion's mistakes, scoring 17 points off turnovers.

Holmes brought down a team-high seven rebounds.

Struggling from the field, Albion shot just 38 percent from the floor, including 17 percent from three.

The Britons will look to right the ship on Saturday at Kalamazoo. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
