Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Garland goes off for 29, MBB season ends in semifinals

HOLLAND, Mich. – Despite sparks of life in the second half, an early deficit was too much to overcome for the Albion College men's basketball team, falling to Hope College 94-82 in the MIAA Semifinals. With the loss, the Britons secured their fourth straight winning season, finishing at 14-13 overall.

Cortez Garland was phenomenal in a 29 point-effort 24 coming in the second half. Justin McAbee added a dozen points for the Britons while swiping three steals. Fellow senior guard MJ Barnes added 10 points as Fred Garland scored 14. Devin Holmes grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

The Flying Dutch were near unstoppable from beyond the arc early on, going 8 for 17 in the first half. On the other side, the Britons struggled, as the leading scorers at halftime only recorded five points.

Albion started the second half with momentum, but could not close the gap to single digits. Hope went on a run midway through the second half that the Britons could not recover from.

Every time throughout the second half Albion would get within 11 and make a run, Hope answered back with a run of their own, building the lead and swinging the momentum in favor of the No. 1 seeded hosts.

Albion struggled to contain Hope's All-MIAA picks, Clayton Dykhouse (31 points) and Evan Thomas (27 points).

The loss potentially ends the careers of Cortez Garland, Justin McAbee, Devin Holmes and MJ Barnes. The quartet have been incredible contributors throughout their time at Albion, amassing 64 wins, a MIAA Tournament and a MIAA Regular Season title.
