Game Recap: Softball |

Another split for softball

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After an off day on Wednesday, the Albion College softball team split another doubleheader down in Florida. Albion opened the day with an 8-0 run rule win over New Jersey City, before the bats went quiet, falling 1-0 to Western Connecticut.

GAME ONE: Albion 8 New Jersey City 0 (5 innings)

Sophomore outfielder Jacqueline Jozefczyk led off the bottom of the first with a roped line drive to center field. After a nine pitch at bat, Shanyn Jewell worked a walk, putting two runners aboard. Lilly Patillo singled down the left field line, driving home Jozefczyk for the first run of the game.

With two runners in scoring position, senior Kacy Rossi lifted a sac fly to center, plating Jewell for a 2-0 advantage.

In the third, Jewell smoked a one-out triple to left. She came around to score when Chloe Miller smacked a single up the middle, pushing the Albion lead to 3-0 through three.

Albion's offense came alive in the fourth, scoring four runs off four hits and aided by one NJCU error. Freshman Megan Maiuri laced a one-out single to left, and moved to second on a misplay by the Gothic Knight outfielder. Dylan Cardinale and Lizzie Bissett each followed Maiuri with a walk to load the bases.

Jozefczyk lined a single into right centerfield to drive in both Maiuri and Cardinale. Jewell tacked on another run, bringing in Bissett with a single through the 5-6 hole. Heading into the fifth, Albion held a significant 7-0 lead.

Kenadie Baareman legged out an infield single in the home half of the fifth, and beat out a throw on a fielder's choice. With Baareman – and plenty of speed – on second, the Britons opted for freshman Kearney Miller to pinch hit. Miller delivered, crushing the first pitch she saw into center, scoring Baareman and ending the game via walk off mercy rule. It was the freshman's first collegiate RBI.

Ashley Pion was masterful in the circle. The junior pitcher was dominant from the start, allowing just two hits over five innings, striking out 10 and walking none.

GAME TWO: Western Connecticut 1 Albion 0

It was a pitcher's duel in the nightcap, with both staffs combining for 24 strikeouts. Western Connecticut played small ball with a runner on third, plating the only run of the game in the top of the sixth.

Albion recorded just two hits in the contest – coming off the bats of Rossi and Jozefczyk.

The Britons will have another morning twinbill on Friday. Albion will take on RIT and Immaculata, with games set for 9 and 11 a.m.
