Softball splits on day five of spring trip

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A pair of homers helped the Albion College softball team salvage a split on Friday afternoon. Albion struggled in game one, falling to Immaculata 10-4 before run-ruling RIT, 10-2.

GAME ONE: Immaculata 10 Albion 4

A sloppy opener by Albion cost the Brits in the contest. As a team, Albion committed five errors and walked 11 batters.

IU put up a four-spot in the top of the first, creating a large deficit for the Britons to battle back from. Shanyn Jewell smoked a one-out double and later stole third. Chloe Miller followed it up by drawing a walk and swiping second. The two came around to score on a single from freshman Hannah Petty, cutting the score to 4-2 after one.

IU would put up runs in the next two innings, adding to the lead.

Albion scored their final two runs in the home half of the fifth. Sophomore Jaclyn Hildebrand hit a two-run single to drive in Kenadie Baareman and Kacy Rossi

GAME TWO: Albion 10 RIT 2

Albion got its revenge against the Tigers after a disappointing loss on Monday. The Brits pounded out 12 hits and got a pair of long balls from Jewell and freshman Dylan Cardinale

In the home half of the first, the Britons scored five runs. Jacqueline Jozefczyk led off the game by beating out an infield single and moved to second when Jewell drew a walk. The pair moved up 60 feet on a passed ball before Albion scratched across the first run of the game.

Petty lifted a sac fly to right, driving home Jozefczyk. After Lilly Patillo was hit by a pitch, Cardinale launched her first collegiate home run to put the Britons up 4-0. Baareman restarted the rally by beating out an infield single and moving to third on an error. She later scored when Mya Nummer drove a double, helping Albion lead 5-0 after one.

With two away in the third, Nummer reached on an error. The junior advanced on a passed ball and scored when Jozefczyk lined a base hit up the middle. Jewell followed by crushing her first home run of the season, giving Albion a comfortable 8-0 advantage.

The Tigers plated a pair of runs in the fourth, but the Brits had already built a sizable lead.

Ashley Pion (4-2) threw four innings, allowing two unearned runs.

The Britons will wrap up their spring trip Saturday morning with games against SUNY-Delhi and Kenyon. Game times are scheduled for 9 and 11 a.m.
