Game Recap: Baseball |

Charron, Haddlesey help baseball split at ONU

ADA, Ohio – In the return trip to wrap up a four-game set, the Albion College baseball team salvaged a split with Ohio Northern University. The Brits dropped a tough 4-3 decision in the opener before holding on for a 7-5 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Ohio Northern 4 Albion 3

In a seven-inning game in the opener, the Polar Bears and Brits traded runs throughout the contest. ONU struck first in the home half of the first before the Britons evened the score in the third.

Senior Sean Haddlesey tripled in the top of the third inning. Classmate Justin Charron grounded out, allowing Haddlesey to score and tying the game at one.

ONU answered in the home half of the frame, scoring twice to take a two run lead.

It didn't take long for the visitors to answer, striking for a pair in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Braeden Emery worked a one-out walk and moved to second when Matt McGann singled. Getting the start as the designated hitter, freshman Sawyer Shotwell ripped a double to center, driving in Emery. Two batters later, a fielder's choice allowed McGann to cross and knot the contest up at three.

An RBI groundout in the fifth would be the deciding run in the game.

Scotty Clippert (0-1) suffered the loss going the distance. The sophomore tossed six innings, allowing four runs – three earned – while striking out five.

Haddlesey and McGann each had multi-hit games for Albion.

GAME TWO: Albion 7 Ohio Northern 5

Haddlesey's hot hitting continued in the nightcap with a leadoff single. Junior Zac Gray followed up Haddlesey with a single to put the Britons in a good position early. McGann roped a double to drive home Haddlesey and put the visitors on top, 1-0.

The Polar Bears scored twice in the bottom of the inning off Albion starter Sean Cooper. Cooper settled in and put together a good outing, providing Albion with the distance needed to play five games in three days.

After ONU took a 3-1 lead, the Brits struck for three in the fifth. With one away, Gavin Kraatz was plunked and moved to third when Patrick Merolla doubled. With two in scoring position, Haddlesey lifted a sac fly to right to put the Britons within one.

Gray followed it up with a single to drive in Merolla. Albion took the lead when Charron knocked a two-bagger to center.

Albion added a run in the sixth. Mark Lauro singled home freshman Chris Marshall, who doubled with one out, giving the Britons a 5-3 advantage. The Polar Bears tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning, but Albion had an answer in the seventh.

Haddlesey singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Charron drove a single up the middle to plate Haddlesey and give the Britons a 6-4 lead. Two batters later, freshman shortstop Ryker Mazey drove a double to score Charron and give Albion much-needed breathing room.

Cooper (1-2) earned his first collegiate win, throwing seven innings. The freshman allowed four runs and struck out six. Louis Cardinale III picked up the save, getting out of a big jam in the eighth and securing the win. He struck out two over two innings of work.

Albion pounded out 11 hits in the nightcap, getting two apiece from Haddlesey, Gray and Charron.

Albion will play its third straight OAC opponent on Tuesday when they return to northwest Ohio to take on Heidelberg. A single nine-inning game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
