McGann homers in loss at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – An early lead slipped away from the Albion College baseball team, falling to Heidelberg University 6-2. Sloppy weather and sloppy defense hurt the Britons in the loss, committing three errors while allowing three unearned runs.

Sophomore Matt McGann got the Britons out in front in the top of the first. Justin Charron worked a two-out walk before McGann followed it up with a no-doubt homer to left center.

In the home half of the second, the Student Princes took a 3-2 lead thanks to a two-out rally. With runners at second and third, the Berg poked a single through the left side to tie the game before it was followed by a single up the middle.

Heidelberg tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth.

Albion could not capitalize after putting two aboard in the top of the sixth. Zac Gray led off with a single and moved to second when Charron was plunked. With two down, Austyn Stephens roped a shot to the third baseman. The HU player made a diving attempt, but when he went to tag third, the ball was dropped to load the bases. A hard lineout ended the inning, keeping the score at 4-2.

Another unearned Student Prince run was scored in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Berg a 5-2 advantage. Heidelberg continued to take advantage of Albion miscues, tacking on an unearned run in the seventh.

Braeden Emery (0-1) threw six innings, allowing just three earned runs. The sophomore scattered seven hits while striking out three.

Albion is scheduled to play a four-game set with Bluffton University this weekend. Though rain may alter the schedule, the Brits will play two at Bluffton on Saturday and a Sunday twinbill.
