Game Recap: Baseball |

Tough Tuesday for baseball

ALBION – Free passes were the achilles heel in the Albion College baseball team's 10-8 loss to Defiance College on Tuesday afternoon. The offense pounded out 13 runs, but the pitching staff walked 10 batters and hit three, extending innings for the Yellow Jackets.

After Defiance scored two in the top of the first, the Brits would answer back with a three-spot in the home half of the inning. Mark Lauro – who finished the day with two hits – blooped a triple over the head of a shallow centerfielder to drive in Justin Charron and Matt McGann. One batter later, an error allowed Lauro to score for a 3-2 Briton lead.

The lead was short-lived as the Yellow Jackets claimed the lead for good in the second. Defiance would score in five of the nine innings, with multiple runs in all but one inning.

Albion plated a pair in both the fifth and sixth innings. Zac Gray led off the fifth with a single to left and moved to third when Charron doubled to left field. Gray later came around to score when McGann lifted a sac fly to right. Two batters later, freshman shortstop Ryker Mazey drove in Charron with a sac fly of his own.

Freshman Chris Marshall smacked his first collegiate home run to lead off the sixth – a no-doubt solo shot to left. Another sac fly – this one off the bat of Gray – drove in the seventh run for the Britons on the day.

Albion's final run came in the ninth when Marshall hit a single up the middle. Marshall, Gray, Lauro and Sean Haddlesey all recorded two hits apiece.

The Britons commence MIAA action on Saturday when they host Kalamazoo for a doubleheader. Game times are slated for 1 and 4 p.m.
