Game Recap: Baseball |

Emery's walk off helps baseball split first MIAA games

ALBION – A little walk off magic helped the Albion College baseball team split their MIAA opener with Kalamazoo. Braeden Emery's sac fly in the bottom of the tenth in game two gave the Britons momentum heading into the rubber match Sunday with a 6-5 win.

After dropping the opening game 13-2, the Brits were ready to answer back in the nightcap.

The Hornets touched up starter Sean Cooper in the top of the first for three runs. The freshman settled in and had a good outing, tossing six innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out three.

Trailing 3-0, the Britons scored twice in the home half of the third. With two outs, Sean Haddlesey hit a double on the right field line and came around to score on a Halamazoo error. Zac Gray stole second and got into scoring position for Justin Charron. The senior had an incredible day at the plate, hitting an RBI single to drive in Gray and cut the deficit to one.

After Kalamazoo extended their lead to 4-2 in the seventh, the Brits answered with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning.

Chris Marshall led off the frame with an infield single and moved to second on a single from Patrick Merolla. After Haddlesey was hit to load the bases, a wild pitch allowed Marshall to cross. Gray lifted a sac fly to right to tie the game and Charron followed with a sac fly in the exact same spot to give the Brits a 5-4 lead.

The Hornets tied the game in the top of the eighth, ultimately sending the game into extras.

In the bottom of the tenth, Gray reached on an error and Charron hit an infield single. Matt McGann was intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a double play. The Hornets recorded the first out of the inning at the plate on a fielder's choice before Emery came to bat.

The sophomore smoked a fly ball deep enough into center that Charron's head first slide was well ahead of the tag, helping the Britons salvage the conference split.

For the third time this season, freshman Brayden Raether (4-2) earned the win out of the bullpen. Over four innings, Raether scattered six hits and struck out two while walking only one.

Charron finished the day with four hits overall, going 2 for 4 in each game.

Weather permitting, Albion will wrap up the Kalamazoo series tomorrow on the road. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
