Sunday Funday! Baseball wins Kalamazoo series

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – For the first time since 2014, the Albion College baseball team claimed the season series against Kalamazoo College, winning the rubber match 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. Some walk off magic on Saturday helped carry momentum into the series finale, as Albion opens MIAA play 2-1.

Senior Sean Haddlesey went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a pair of extra base hits. The combined effort on the mound from Scotty Clippert, Louis Cardinale III and Brayden Raether silenced the hot Kalamazoo bats, limiting the hosts to just one run.

Haddlesey led off the game with a double down the line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Zac Gray poked an RBI single through the right side to plate Haddlesey and give the Brits a 1-0 lead.

In the second, Austyn Stephens led off the inning with a base hit and Chris Marshall followed with one of his own. A beautiful sac bunt by Patrick Merolla moved the runners 90 feet for Haddlesey. The senior delivered, lifting a sac fly to drive in Stephens and double the Briton lead.

Clippert ran into some trouble in the bottom of the second, seeing runners at second and third with one away. The sophomore got the Kalamazoo designated hitter to go down swinging and then induced a groundout to Gray at second to get out of the frame unscathed.

The Hornets scored their lone run in the third, but it would be all they would get as the trio of pitchers put together a stellar performance on the mound.

With two on and one out in the fourth, Cardinale III entered in a jam. The junior punched out the first hitter he saw before a flyout to Haddlesey in left to keep it a one run game.

Albion's much-needed insurance run came in the top of the fifth. Once again it was Haddlesey doing damage, leading off with a triple to center. Justin Charron reached on an error for a 3-1 Briton advantage.

Raether earned a six out save, but it didn't come without excitement. Back to back singles sent the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. The freshman stepped up in a critical spot, getting the three and four hitters to strikeout before a popout ended the game.

The Britons sit at 7-11 overall, 2-1 in conference play.

Albion's MIAA slate will continue on Tuesday with a single game at Olivet. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
