Three straight conference wins for baseball

ALBION – Putting up some season-high offensive numbers, the Albion College baseball team won their third straight with an 11-7 win over Olivet College. Mark Lauro finished the day 3 for 5 with four RBI with the exclamation point coming on a no doubt solo shot followed by a bat flip.

A six run first lifted the Brits to a commanding lead after one. Sean Haddlesey scorched a double into deep left center to lead off the game. With one away, Justin Charron hit a single through the left side before Matt McGann was hit by a pitch. Lauro stepped up with the bases loaded and hammered a ball off the right field wall, driving in both Haddlesey and Charron.

Freshman Ryker Mazey continued his impressive campaign with a single up the middle to reload the bases. Fellow freshman Chris Marshall lined a two-run double to left, giving Albion a 4-0 lead early on. Austyn Stephens followed with a base hit up the middle to plate Mazey and knock the Olivet starter out of the game. The final Albion run came when the Brits batted around and Patrick Merolla lifted a sac fly to center for a big 6-0 lead after one.

The Comets chipped away at the Albion lead, eventually trimming the score to 6-4 after four and a half. In the bottom of the fifth, the Brits responded with three runs to boost their advantage to 9-4. Albion led off the frame with three straight doubles – thanks to McGann, Lauro and Mazey. Mazery later came around to score on a double play to push Albion back in front by five runs.

Junior Zac Gray hit an RBI single down the left field line in the seventh to add to Albion's lead. The final Briton run came in the eighth when Lauro launched his first collegiate home run – a no doubter – to right for an 11-6 lead.

A pair of freshmen led the way on the mound. Andrew Renner's first collegiate appearance was strong, throwing three innings and striking out five. Ashton Abnet (1-0) picked up the win, tossing six innings and walking none. The pair combined to walk just one hitter and strike out nine.

Charron and Lauro both had three hits in the game.

The 15 hits, 11 runs and 10 RBI are all season-highs for Albion. The Britons now improve to 8-11 overall, 3-1 in the MIAA.

Mother nature has already altered this weekend's forecast. On Saturday, the Brits will now host Alma for a single game before traveling to Alma on Sunday for the series doubleheader. An official start time for Saturday is still TBD.
