Game Recap: Baseball |

Cooper tosses complete game gem, BSB wins fourth straight

ALBION – When you drive the first pitch of the game out of the park, it's about to be a good day.

That's exactly what Sean Haddlesey did, as the senior was a huge piece to the Albion College baseball team's 6-2 win over Alma College. Freshman Sean Cooper was phenomenal on the mound, going the distance while striking out seven and allowing just one earned run.

Haddlesey and Justin Charron, fittingly enough the team's two seniors, each recorded multi-hit afternoons.

The Britons wasted no time getting on the board, as Haddlesey sent the first pitch over the right field wall for an early 1-0 advantage.

A five-run fourth would prove pivotal for Albion in the win. Chris Marshall hit a one out single and stole second. Junior Patrick Merolla followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 Briton lead. On the next pitch, Merolla swiped second to get into scoring position for Haddlesey. Haddlesey worked a walk, but a wild pitch in the plate appearance allowed Merolla to scamper to third.

With runners at the corners, Zac Gray muscled a bloop single into left, driving in Merolla for a three run lead. Charron followed by crushing a double down the left field line, sending home both runners for a 5-0 advantage. Sophomore catcher Matt McGann capped off the scoring by trading places with Charron for an opposite field double and a 6-0 lead through four.

Alma touched up Cooper for a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, but the freshman was dealing on the mound. Cooper scattered just six hits in the ball game, walking only two.

Albion improves to 9-11 overall, winning their last four games. The Britons now sit at 4-1 in conference play.

The final two games of the series will be played Sunday at Alma. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m.
