Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball wins second straight MIAA series

ALMA, Mich. – For the second straight weekend, the Albion College baseball team has won another MIAA series.

After winning game one Saturday, the Britons split Sunday's double header with Alma College. The Scots took game one, 9-3, before Albion gritted out a 4-2 victory in the rubber match.

GAME ONE: Alma 9 Albion 3

With only four hits and a shaky bullpen, the Scots evened the series by taking game one of the doubleheader. Albion briefly led 3-2 off a two run hit by Matt McGann, but that would be all the Brits would get in the game.

Alma erupted late in the game offensively, as Albion's offense would not be able to battle back.

Scotty Clippert took the loss, throwing 4.1 innings, allowing just two runs and striking out three.

GAME TWO: Albion 4 Alma 2

Able to capitalize off Alma miscues, the Britons bounced back for a win in game two.

Albion took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Justin Charron worked a one out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mark Lauro crushed one of his two hits in the game to right, driving in Charron for an early lead.

The Britons doubled their lead in the fifth. Junior Patrick Merolla walked and stole second. He came around to score on an error by the Alma defense for a 2-0 lead midway through the contest.

After a run by the Scots, the Brits battled right back to take a 3-1 lead. Ryker Mazey roped a double down the left field line and later came around to score when Sean Haddlesey reached on an error.

Clinging to a one run lead, the Britons got a much-needed insurance run in the ninth. Haddlesey kept his hot bat going with a single, moving to second on a wild pitch and scoring on the third Alma error of the game.

Pete Loch and Andrew Renner combined for a phenomenal outing on the mound. Loch threw 4.2, allowing one run, two hits and striking out three. Renner's first relief appearance was a solid one, earning the win while striking out two.

Albion will head to Olivet on Wednesday as part of the schedule changes from last week. Wednesday's game at Olivet will be a 4 p.m. first pitch.
