My oh Mya! Nummer strikes for 7 RBI

ALBION – A seven RBI performance by junior 9-hitter Mya Nummer lifted the Albion College softball team to a sweep of Finlandia University on a dreary Wednesday. Dodging raindrops all afternoon, the Britons earned a pair of run rule wins over the Lions, 9-1 and 12-4.

KEY STATS

Mya Nummer: 5 for 6, 7 RBI
Lilly Patillo: 4 for 6, 4 RBI
Ashley Pion: 5 IP, 3 H, 10 K

GAME ONE: Albion 9 Finlandia 1

Neither team recorded a base hit until the fourth, but the Britons were able to push across a run in the bottom of the third. Rachel Horecki led off the inning with a walk. Nummer drew a walk to follow, but the Lion defense lost track of the count and threw down to second on ball four. The throw went into center and heads up baserunning by Horecki allowed the freshman to scamper to third. Two batters later, Megan Maiuri's sac bunt brought home Horecki for a 1-0 lead.

Albion exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning. Patillo's double to left was the first hit of the game for either team. Kacy Rossi singled on a bunt and Shanyn Jewell walked to load the bases for Olivia Polak. The senior drew a walk for a 2-0 lead after forcing in Patillo. Another bases loaded walk gave Albion a 3-0 lead in the home half of the fourth.

After a pitching change, Nummer laced a single through the right side to bring in Polak and Jewell. Two batters later, sophomore Chloe Miller lifted a sac fly to left to dive in Nummer. The Britons ended up batting around in the inning as a single from Patillo brought in Jacqueline Jozefczyk

The Lions extended the game in the fifth by plating a run. In the bottom of the fifth, Polak smoked a one-out single up the middle and stole scond. The speedy senior scored on a walk off single by Nummer giving the Britons the game one victory.

Pion (5-4) went the distance, tossing a no-hitter until the fifth. The junior punched out 10 hitters while walking a pair.

GAME TWO: Albion 12 Finlandia 4

Finlandia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, touching up starter Gabrielle Hirkaway. Hirkaway settled in to earn her first collegiate victory in the circle, pitching six innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out five.

With two outs in the second, Dylan Cardinale blooped a single up the middle and moved to second on another bloop single – this one off the bat of Lizzie Bissett. Nummer drove in the first Briton run of the nightcap with a single to right to drive in Cardinale and cut into the Finlandia lead.

Albion scored four in the fourth, led by a leadoff double from Bissett. Bissett was a perfect 3 for 3 in the night cap. One pitch later, the sophomore scored on a RBI single from Nummer. With the bases loaded and one out, Patillo laced a single to left, driving in Jozefczyk and Nummer to tie the game at three. Two batters later, a single from Jewell brought home a pair of runners to give the hosts a 5-3 lead.

The Lions scored one in the top of the fifth and left the tying run stranded at third. Albion immediately answered with another four-spot. Once again, Bissett led off the frame with a two-bagger and later came around to score on a double off the bat of Jozefczyk. The Britons took a 7-4 lead on a wild pitch that brought in Jozefczyk. With two on, Patillo capitalized with her second double of the day, giving the hosts a 9-4 lead after five.

After Cardinale and Bissett reached, Nummer cranked a stand up triple to right, scoring both runners for an 11-4 lead in the sixth. With Nummer 60 feet away, a wild pitch allowed the junior to score and end the game in run rule fashion.
