Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball drops two tough ones in Ohio

DELAWARE, OHIO – A pair of one run games hurt the Albion College baseball team on Friday, after being swept by Ohio Wesleyan University 3-2 and 8-7.

GAME ONE: Ohio Wesleyan 3 Albion 2 (7 innings)

The Battling Bishops got on the board first in game one, scoring an unearned run in the home half of the first inning. Albion was able to tie the game in the top of the second. Senior Justin Charron was hit to lead off the frame, and moved to second on a passed ball. After moving to third on a groundout, Charron came around to score when Austyn Stephens smacked a single through the left side.

It didn't take long for OWU to answer back, retaking the lead in the bottom of the second off a leadoff home run.

In the fourth, Charron drew a walk and later scored on an OWU fielding error, tying the game back up at two.

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, plating one run on three hits. The Brits stranded a pair of runners with one out in the top of the seventh, unable to extend the game.

Albion mustered just fourth hits in the game, while the pitching staff issued seven walks.

GAME TWO: Ohio Wesleyan 8 Albion 7

Stephens added to his impressive freshman campaign by breaking a scoreless tie in the fourth. With one on and nobody out, the freshman crushed a home run to center, giving the Britons a 2-0 lead.

The hosts exploded in the home half, scoring eight runs off four hits and two Albion errors.

Albion cut the lead in half in the fifth, tacking on a pair of runs. Sean Haddlesey singled up the middle and scored from first when Zac Gray doubled down the line. One batter later, Charron knocked a double to right, driving in Gray for an 8-4 deficit.

Just as the Britons were putting a ninth inning rally together, the game was called in the top of the ninth with one away due to darkness. Patrick Merolla led off the inning with a double, and moved to third when Haddlesey reached on an error. Gray lifted a sac fly, driving in Merolla and moving Haddlesey to third.

With two on, Stephens continued to do damage with a double to right, putting the Britons within one. OWU was poised to make a pitching change, but the game was called to darkness.

Albion hits the road and heads to the Sunshine State where they will play five games in six days. The Britons begin their Florida campaign on Monday against Cornell College. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
