Changes in latitude: seven strong from Raether leads BSB

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – A strong start from Brayden Raether, a four-spot in the fourth and timely hitting helped the Albion College baseball team pick up its first win of the season. In their Florida debut, the Britons defeated Cornell College, 8-1.

Rather threw seven innings of one-run ball. The freshman struck out three and got out of a big bases loaded jam in the fifth.

Freshman shortstop Ryker Mazey was 3 for 5 in the win. Between Mazey and Patrick Merolla, the bottom of the order did plenty of damage, combining for three RBI.

With one away in the fourth, Braeden Emery lined a single up the middle and moved over on a passed ball and a wild pitch. With a runner on third, Mark Lauro lined a ball the Cornell first baseman was unable to handle, scoring Emery for the first run of the afternoon.

Mazey followed up Lauro with a double to the gap in right center, putting a pair of runners in scoring position for Merolla. The junior centerfielder delivered with a base hit up the middle, plating Lauro and Mazey for a 3-0 lead. On the next pitch, Merolla stole third to put another run 90 feet away. Sean Haddlesey capped off the scoring with an RBI groundout, giving Albion a 4-0 lead after three and a half.

Cornell scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth.

Holding onto a three run lead, Raether worked his way into and out of trouble in the bottom of the sixth. A hit, an error and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out for the Rams. Raether bounced back, striking out the next batter and being a pitch away from wiggling out of the jam. The freshman did just that, inducing a 6-4-3 double play to keep the Britons ahead.

Albion padded its lead in the top of the eighth. Lauro and Mazey started the inning with back to back singles. Merolla's sac bunt attempt saw an errant throw, allowing Lauro to score and putting a pair in scoring position. Haddlesey followed it up lifting a deep sac fly, driving in Mazey. One hitter later, Zac Gray contributed a sac fly of his own, putting the Britons ahead 7-1.

In the eighth, Mazey drove an RBI single for an 8-1 lead.

Raether got plenty of defensive gems from his left side, including a number of plays with Mazey ranging up the middle. Early in the contest, Emery snared a liner down the line with a diving play. The next inning, Lauro made a diving grab right on the foul line in left field.

Chad Antone pitched a scoreless two innings in relief. The freshman allowed just one hit while striking out a pair.

Each team left 10 runners on in the contest.

Albion will continue their Florida trip on Tuesday morning against Concordia-Chicago. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m.
