Baseball drops walkoff heartbreaker

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — In heartbreaking fashion, the Albion College baseball team saw a late lead slip away, falling 7-6 to Concordia-Chicago on Tuesday. The Cougars blasted a walk off solo shot in the bottom of the ninth to complete the comeback.

Headed into the bottom of the seventh, Albion held a four run advantage.

Freshman Austyn Stephens reached on an error to lead off the second and later stole second base. With two down, Mark Lauro singled through the right side, driving in Stephens for a 1-0 lead. After Lauro moved up a base on a balk, Ryker Mazey singled to left, plating Lauro and giving the Brits a 2-0 lead in the second.

In the home half of the inning, the Cougars capitalized with a pair of runners in scoring position, tying the game at two.

Zac Gray singled to lead off the third and moved to second when Justin Charron reached on an error. With two away and runners at the corners, Charron stole second, but the CUC catcher's throw was errant, landing in centerfield and allowing Gray to score. Sophomore Braeden Emery smoked a single through the left side to drive in Charron and put the Britons back on top, 4-2.

Mazey singled and stole second to lead off the fourth inning. The freshman later came around to score when Sean Haddlesey laced an opposite field single to right, boosting the lead to 5-2.

Stephens drove in Gray in the seventh on a sac fly to cap off the scoring for Albion, but with nine outs to go, the Cougars spoiled a win for the Brits.

In the home half of the seventh, CUC pounded out four runs off four hits to tie the game at six. Three batters were walked in the frame as well, extending the inning with runners on. The tie game set up the dramatic ending with CUC's pinch hit walk off homer in the ninth.

Mazey was the only Briton with a multi-hit day, going 3 for 4.

Freshman Sean Cooper went six innings after getting the start on the bump. Cooper allowed just two runs on five hits.

Albion will have an off day on Wednesday before beginning the second half of their spring trip. On Thursday, the Britons will play King's University at 6:30 p.m.
